Travel, family on summer vacation

The weather is here and is calling your name. Sunscreen ready, check, cute bathing suit, check, 10 pounds gone, check, hubby anxious to go, check, you’re ready right? You’re ready to answer the call of the weather until you hear these sweet little voices in the background saying, “Mommy, I’m hungry.” There goes the trip right? Wrong.

Traveling with babies and children does not have to wreck your summer plans for fun and excitement. It just means you have to pack more and plan better. Start with the plan. How about a weekend at the beach? Sounds like a winner to me. Search for the most family friendly beach available. A family friendly beach should have the following top three requirements, plenty of lifeguards, bathrooms and calm waters. Lifeguards are necessary for children that wade out too far and adults who are not as good a swimmer as they think. Bathrooms are a requirement for children who have to go quickly. Where ever you lay your blanket make sure bathrooms are within sight. You don’t want your trip ruined by unnecessary accidents. Pull ups are always an option.

Now that you have the beach, find a hotel that has a microwave and refrigerator in the room. Plan to stay one night and the more advance notice you have, the cheaper the room will be. But lets say you are planning a spontaneous adventure. There are all kinds of specials and coupons on line to help you save money.

With a hotel room that has a refrigerator and microwave you can now plan the food you will take. Bringing your own food not only saves money but it saves time in a line and you also control the amount of salt, fat and sugar your family intakes. Plan meals that travel well and won’t spoil quickly. Make your own breakfast bars, take applesauce and fruit is always a great way to start the day. Don’t plan anything too heavy. Veggies and dips are fun food for children. You want energizing food.

Now that you have the place, the room and your meals get ready to pack clothes and accessories. Pack the beach essentials swimsuits, pack two for each child in case of accidents, beach towels, bring extra, sunscreen for adults and children, summer hats and shades for adults and children, a blanket to spread out so everyone can fit on it, doubles as a place for naps, a zip lock bag for essentials like phone, keys and others things you don’t want to get wet or sandy, and two sets of clothes for each day.

The goal is to have fun even when you have babies and small children. The better you plan and the better you pack ensures a great time for all.

Have fun and take pics.

What do you do to plan a trip with the kids?
