Suppressing Sibling Rivalry with the help of Netflix

Having three boys everyone must know there is hardly ever any quietness in the house. Usually you will hear toys clashing, cars racing, balls bouncing and the noise of three brothers arguing or fighting about anything and everything. I know there are others moms and dads who can agree their homes are the same when the siblings get together. Boys are a joy to have and it’s never a dull moment as we are always on the go, never slowing down and learning new things until they finally drop at night and we can prepare ourselves for another day tomorrow to do it all over again.

sibling rivalry

The arguing is usually between my oldest and youngest who are a little over three years apart. It seems like they live to argue and fight with each other daily 24/7. When they play together all is okay for a little bit until one does something the other doesn’t like or the oldest starts making up new rules as they go along and the youngest just doesn’t want to follow along. I swear deep down they love each other and can’t go a day or two without seeing each other and fingers crossed as they get older will be best of friends, brothers can be. I try numerous things to tame the arguments and try to help them all get along but sometimes I tell myself I sound like a broken record and I get exhausted by being the referee all day long. Sometimes I just have to let them figure it out as long as no one is being to mean or one gets hurts. I have to let them be for the sake of them figuring out how to deal with certain situations and then learn when mom or dad needs to help out.

One thing I can say is this family LOVES Netflix and is apart of our daily routine. For us to get off to school with everyone in a good mood to have a good day the boys must watch a show on the ride to school so there is no arguing and they can laugh and talk about the show as they watch it. Also, we do the same thing in the afternoons on the way home for school since we have a 30 minute ride home is to watch the rest of the show or the next one they can agree on. If they don’t watch Netflix it is for example Eli, the youngest, will say Ty or Andrew I saw you doing this at school today and of course Ty and Andrew being themselves and being older than him will have something to say that is either a “smart boy” answer or an argument because Eli may have not seen exactly what they were doing, so then there is the first argument of the afternoon not even being in the car less than five minutes. Or another big thing is Andrew, the oldest, will start in on one of them about anything because Andrew is almost 10, so he is in the I’m the oldest, I know it all phase, topped with a big attitude and rolling eyes. I am sure if you are reading this you can either relate or dread this stage for your child. Ugh, sometimes I just don’t know how to handle the attitude and rolling eyes and back talk because he isn’t suppose to be acting this way. He is suppose to be my baby not talking like a pre-teen who is ready to grow up and knows it all no matter what.

School is almost out and I can say without Netflix this year I am not sure how we would have handled the ride to and from school like we did. I am sure we would have dealt with it but am really thankful I could use that 30 minute ride to talk with the boys about their day without the arguing before I started one of their shows. The boys have watched Puss & Boots, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Goosebumps, Total Drama Action, Yo-Kai Watch, Air Bud, Air Buddies to just name a few and they are making a list of shows and movies they can enjoy this summer.

Here are a few movies that maybe your kids can relate to and enjoy:
