Children – they change our lives in more ways than we can imagine. From child proofing your house to making sure they’re safe and tucked in at night, having a car suitable for a small family with young kids is important. As parents, we want nothing more than to keep them secure as we do the driving.
What about your 2 door sports car? I’m afraid that just won’t cut it anymore! Having at least one child compels you to get something a little bit roomier, with more cargo space and accessories. Here are my personal choices if I had to choose a car for my growing family.
Cooper S Countryman – For those who refuse to throw in the towel
If you still want to hold on the last vestiges of your life being a single, hip adult but you already have a wife and two small children, then the Mini Cooper S Countryman is the car for you. This “mini” crossover (pun intended) has all the bells and whistles to make any car enthusiast drool. With ample cargo space meant to swallow mountain bikes (and groceries!), the Cooper S Countryman has been an IIHS tops safety pick 4 years running. Available in 2WD and 4WD, this versatile car also comes in two engines depending on the “package” you choose. Regardless of engine choice, the Cooper is a beautifully designed car that can fit five adults comfortably. Your kids will also love the sporty interiors and will find this car as cute as a bunny.
Mitsubishi Lancer – A mommy car with a bit more attitude
If you want a bigger car with more attitude, look no further. The Mitsubishi Lancer’s aggressive styling makes it look more like a jet fighter than a car. When looked at from the front, the grill actually seems to growl at you, which is a good thing if you’re into that!
This sporty compact sedan comes with 6 airbags and a host of other safety features like Active Stability Control (ASC) and an Anti-Lock Breaking System (ABS) that will keep you and your family safe. Powered by a 168-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a 5 speed Continuously Variable Transmission or CVT, the Lancer gives you both power and fuel economy for those long family road trips.
Toyota Prius – Environmentally Fabulous
If you want to help the environment, then go to Toyota and grab yourself a Prius. One of the most popular hybrid cars of all time, the Prius gives you unmatched fuel economy and future savings. It’s surprisingly roomy; with space-ship looking interiors that are perfect if you have young kids. Pretend you’re Captain Kirk and put the pedal to the electric motor.
Ford Explorer – For moms who want bigger style.
The new explorer is one of the best looking SUVs in the market today. If you’re family is growing and you need a bigger ride, then the Ford Explorer is your best bet. With a new look that is strikingly similar to that of the Land Rover Evoque, the new explorer is definitely a winner in the looks department. With sophisticated interiors and chock full of touch sensitive accessories, this roomy SUV can fit all your stuff with its large cargo space. If you’re worried about fuel prices, you can go for the peppy 2.0 L turbocharged 4-cylinder Ecoboost version.
Subaru Forester – When rugged is the new sexy
The 2015 Subaru Forester is a beast of a crossover. It has generous cargo space, good fuel economy, standard AWD (all wheel drive) and a roomy interior which is perfect for a family with growing children.
Opt for the turbocharged model for better acceleration and if you regularly haul a lot of extra weight. Other trims and features include: Bluetooth, dual-zone air conditioning with auto climate control, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and pre collision braking.
Whichever car you choose, make sure you consider factors like overall safety features, crash test data, engine performance and fuel efficiency. Also make sure the car has enough accessories and other child friendly features to make your family trips awesome.
