Life of a Southern Mom had the pleasure of working with Dropcam to review their Dropcam Pro. Dropcam’s story is a rather unique one. Dropcam was Co-founded by Greg Duffy and Aamir Virani. Greg’s father was dealing with a pesky problem with one of the neighboring dogs leaving “presents” in this yard. His father wanted to figure out which dog it was. Greg set up IP cameras around the home, but had difficulties. He also had complications storing the video one his hard drive and keeping it secure. Greg reached out to his friend Aamir for help. They took their idea and began looking for investors. After some time they became successful by gaining the backing of Mitch Kapor, tech pioneer. Dropcam was launched in 2009.
The Dropcam Pro is a cloudy-based WiFi video monitoring system. The Dropcam Pro features two-way talk, remote viewing and free live streaming. This makes it simple to stay connected with people, pets and places, no matter where you are in the world.
I’m not a tech savvy person, so I was nervous about setting up the Dropcam Pro. It turns out set up is a breeze! It only takes a few steps to set up the camera. First, you plug the camera into your computers USB port. The cameras light will blink yellow. Second, double click the launch icon. Finally, follow the instructions to complete the set up. It’s that simple. I was shocked to see how easy the set up was. Once my user name and password was set up, I had a live stream coming from my camera. I love how the Dropcam Pro sends an encrypted video to the cloud. This way my camera remains private and secure. There is an option to make your camera public if you prefer. The camera comes with the optional Cloud Recording feature that allows you to store your footage securely so you can access whenever you please.
The quality of the video feed is superb! The camera offers 130 degrees field of view and you can focus on one part of the room with 8x zoom. This helps with keeping an eye on children, pets and your home while you’re away. There is a built-in mic and speaker for two-way talk capabilities. The camera has many more features which include free live streaming through mobile and web apps, automatic updates, location awareness, scheduling, sharing and cloud recording.
The Dropcam Pro is fantastic! The only negative thing about the Dropcam Pro is that I was unable to use it with my Microsoft Surface RT. At this time there aren’t any apps. However, I was able to connect to my iPad with ease. You can also connect through your iPhone, iPod Touch or Andriod.
