Crayola has always been about color and creativity. They have been inspiring children create new and exciting things for over 100 years. Teachers turn to Crayola as a brand when they are looking to put together art projects at school. Crayola has a passion for bringing parents and the educators that enrich their children’s lives together in helping to raise children into adults that are original and inspired. The first box of Crayola crayons came off the assembly line in 1903 and the company has not slowed down in creativity since.
Their company began with cousins Edwin Binney and C. Harold Smith when they took over Edwin’s father’s pigment business in 1885. The early products that they started off with were red oxide pigments that could be used as barn pain and carbon blacks that were used in car tires. Sounds a bit boring right? Nothing really creative about that.
Binney and Smith realized that there was a need for safe, high quality and affordable wax crayons. They then made their first box of 8 crayons and sold them for 5 cents. Crayola has moved on over the years to more creative and innovative products that include art tools, crafting activities and even creative toys that allow kids to explore, discover, play and pretend in all the ways that they want. They want nothing more but for kids to be inspired and to create all things possible in their imagination. In 1984, Hallmark even became involved with Hallmark Cards and has added personal touches to strategies in developing cards for the company. One thing I bet you did not know was that until 2007 the company was named Binney & Smith. It was not until then that the company name was changed to Crayola to reflect the brand that had grown to number one.
